Starting today, travelers to the United Kingdom can begin applying for the new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), a digital entry permit that will become mandatory from April 2, 2024.
The ETA serves as a digital security check for travelers arriving in the UK without a visa. This means that a passport alone will no longer be sufficient to enter the country.
The application fee is currently £10 ($12.80) but will increase to £16 ($20.55) in the coming months.
The ETA is digitally linked to the traveler’s passport and is valid for multiple entries over two years or until the passport expires.
Visitors can stay in the UK for up to six months for tourism, family visits, or transit.
By April 2, 2025, all foreign travelers who do not require a visa to visit the UK must obtain an ETA before their trip. The only exceptions are British and Irish citizens.
According to the UK government, the ETA aligns with border security measures in countries like the US and Australia. It is designed to prevent entry to individuals who pose security risks and enhance border control efficiency.
Eligible travelers can submit their applications through the UK ETA app or the official government website.
