The United Kingdom has announced a significant increase in defense spending, emphasizing support for Ukraine and NATO, and maintaining its nuclear deterrent capabilities.

This announcement was made by Defense Secretary John Healey in his inaugural address to the defense staff.

"We know there are serious problems - with our Armed Forces hollowed out and under funded for 14 years [under the Conservatives]. And this government now is totally committed to 2.5% of Defense spending, to NATO, to the nuclear deterrent and to support for Ukraine," Healy said in a statement released by the Defense Ministry.

"The country has new leadership. This Ministry has new leadership. Our mission is to make Britain secure at home and strong abroad, with the guiding principle of one Defense."

This announcement follows the formation of a new cabinet by Prime Minister Keir Starmer after the Labour Party's victory in the parliamentary elections held on July 4.

The Labour Party secured 412 seats in the 650-seat House of Commons, marking a decisive win over the Conservative Party, which managed to secure only 121 seats, the lowest in its history since 2010.
