Lucy Powell has been removed from her position as Speaker of the UK House of Commons, in what appears to be a sweeping government reshuffle led by the Labour Party.
According to Sky News, Scottish Secretary Ian Murray has also been dismissed.
The shake-up follows the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner earlier this week.
Powell, who represents Manchester Central, confirmed her dismissal, noting that she had not intended to step down and believed there was still important work to be done.
In a statement shared online, Powell said serving in government “was an honour” and that she had “truly enjoyed” the role.
She pointed to her reforms in modernising the Commons, including stricter rules on MPs taking second jobs, as key achievements during her tenure.
