British Foreign Secretary David Cameron and his German counterpart, Annalena Baerbock, emphasized the "urgent need" for a "permanent ceasefire" in Gaza on Saturday.

In a joint article published in The Sunday Times, the ministers stated that a very large number of civilians have been killed in this conflict and urged Israel to end its military operation against Hamas both quickly and permanently.

They wrote, as reported by the French Press Agency (AFP), "We must do everything we can to pave the way for a permanent ceasefire leading to lasting peace. The need is urgent."

However, the ministers also pointed out that they do not believe that calling now for a general and immediate ceasefire, in the hope that it will become permanent at some point, is the way forward.

The United Nations General Assembly had voted overwhelmingly for a non-binding resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza on Tuesday, but the UK abstained from the vote.

Israel faces increasing pressure from its allies regarding its war in Gaza, with the United States, its main supporter, criticizing what it termed "indiscriminate shelling" leading to civilian casualties.
