UK Corona Cases have approached a high record, with an estimated one in 13 people infected with the virus in the past week, according to the British official statistics authority.

On Friday, the National Statistics Office said that it is estimated that about 4.9 million people were infected with the Corona virus in the week ending March 26, up from 4.3 million recorded in the previous week.

The latest increase has been driven by the more transmissible PA2 mutant, which is the predominant mutant across the UK.

Hospitalizations and deaths are rising again, although the number of people dying from COVID-19 is still relatively low compared to earlier this year.

However, the latest estimates are that the intense rise in news cases has started since late February, when Prime Minister Boris Johnson canceled all remaining restrictions on the Coronavirus in the UK.

The figures were released on the day the government ended free, rapid COVID-19 tests for most people in the UK under Johnson's plan to "Live with Covid".

Those who do not have health conditions that make them more susceptible to Coronavirus now need to pay for tests to see if they are infected.
