The UK government has announced a new £75 million ($99 million) initiative aimed at bolstering border security and cracking down on human traffickers.
British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper confirmed the funding, which will be used to increase border security personnel and enhance the UK's technological capabilities to combat organized crime networks involved in human smuggling.
Cooper emphasized that the investment will modernize the country's border enforcement efforts, making use of advanced technology and improved intelligence capabilities to tackle the growing issue.
The initiative comes after a weekend where over 1,000 migrants arrived in the UK, and eight men tragically lost their lives attempting to cross the English Channel.
Cooper stated that criminal gangs involved in human smuggling are escaping justice and jeopardizing national security while endangering lives.
The updated security strategy will aim to dismantle trafficking rings and protect the UK’s borders more effectively.
The funding for this initiative will be redirected from the budget initially allocated for the controversial "Rwanda Plan" introduced by the previous government under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
This move reflects the UK government’s commitment to address the pressing issue of illegal migration and human trafficking in a more direct and impactful manner.
