The UAE plans to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) into public school curricula next academic year, as part of its efforts to become a regional hub in AI technology development.

The new curriculum will be implemented during the 2025/26 academic year and will cover all levels from kindergarten to grade 12, according to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on Sunday.

The curriculum includes basic concepts and practical applications of AI, along with ethical awareness related to its use.

With this move, the UAE joins a growing group of countries seeking to integrate AI into school education. Last month, Beijing announced a similar move to teach AI to primary and secondary school students in China.

The UAE has invested heavily in data centers used to train AI models and has established an AI investment fund that people familiar with the matter say could exceed $100 billion in the next few years.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, stated last year that the UAE could serve as a global "regulatory sandbox" for testing AI technologies and later lead the development of global rules governing its use.

In a related development, the United States is considering easing restrictions on Nvidia sales to the UAE ahead of US President Donald Trump's upcoming visit in mid-May, a move that could boost the UAE's chances in the regional AI race. Trump's Middle East tour also includes stops in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

The UAE has previously announced plans to invest up to $1.4 trillion over the next decade in energy, semiconductors, AI infrastructure, and manufacturing in America.
