Turkey’s Baykar Makina, the defense firm known for its cutting-edge unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), has received approval from Italian authorities to acquire aviation and defense manufacturer Piaggio Aerospace.

The Italian Ministry of Industry authorized the sale, which positions Baykar to expand its capabilities into broader aviation and engine manufacturing sectors. Financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed.

Piaggio Aerospace, previously Piaggio Aero Industries SpA, designs and produces aircraft and aviation engines for both military and civilian applications. The company, which has been under special administration since 2018 due to financial challenges, attracted three binding offers during the sale process.

This acquisition aligns with Baykar’s ambition to enhance its presence in the aviation sector. Known globally for its Bayraktar TB2 and Kızılelma UAVs, Baykar is expected to leverage Piaggio Aerospace’s expertise, particularly in engine manufacturing, to address a critical need for indigenous aviation engine production.

Italian Minister of Industry Adolfo Urso emphasized Piaggio Aerospace’s value as a “strategic asset for the country.” Urso expressed optimism about the company’s revitalization under Baykar’s leadership, stating that the goal is to relaunch Piaggio Aerospace with “a clear and ambitious industrial vision.”

The deal also highlights the evolving nature of defense collaborations in Europe, as Baykar’s acquisition could signify closer integration of Turkish and Italian aerospace industries. Analysts note that Baykar’s access to Piaggio’s existing technology and manufacturing infrastructure could streamline its plans for advanced UAV development.

Piaggio Aerospace is known for its innovative designs, including the P.180 Avanti, a turboprop aircraft with unique aerodynamic features. The company’s portfolio also includes UAV platforms, making it an ideal fit for Baykar’s expanding ambitions. However, Piaggio Aerospace’s most critical offering is its engine production capabilities—a sector in which Baykar has sought significant advancements.
