The Turkish Ambassador to Egypt, Salih Mutlu, marked International Women’s Day with a tribute to influential women in his personal life as well as historical figures who left a lasting impact on the shared heritage of Türkiye and Egypt.

In a post published on social media, Mutlu honored his late mother, recalling her resilience in overcoming a difficult childhood after losing both of her parents. He said her determination allowed her to build a life and raise her children despite the hardships she faced.

The ambassador also expressed gratitude to his wife, the mother of his son, praising her dedication and the support she has given him throughout his professional career.

Mutlu’s message extended beyond personal tributes to highlight prominent women who contributed to the historical and cultural ties between Türkiye and Egypt. Among them was Zeynep Kamil, daughter of Muhammad Ali Pasha, who founded the Zeynep Kamil Women and Children’s Hospital and played an important role in charitable and social work.

He also commemorated Emine Ilhami, the mother of Abbas Hilmi II, the last Khedive of Egypt. Mutlu noted that she was widely admired by Egyptians for her patriotism and opposition to foreign occupation, adding that she was honored with the title “Pasha” by Abdul Hamid II, an exceptional recognition for a woman at the time.

The ambassador further paid tribute to Kadriye Hüseyin, daughter of Hussein Kamel and a prominent writer who helped represent Turkish literature in Egypt. Mutlu highlighted her intellectual contributions and her support for the Turkish national struggle, noting her friendship with Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

Mutlu said these women left “deep and indelible marks” on the social, cultural and political history shared by Türkiye and Egypt, emphasizing the important role women have played in shaping the ties between the two nations.

International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8, highlights the achievements of women and calls for accelerated action to achieve gender equality.
