On Tuesday, the Embassy of Turkey in Cairo participated in a commemoration ceremony at the Turkish Martyrs' Cemetery in Cairo, Egypt to mark the 110th anniversary of Martyrs' Day and the victory at the Battle of Gallipoli.
The Turkish Ambassador Salih Mutlu Şen, members of the Turkish embassy, staff members from the Yunus Emre Institute, members from the Turkish business community, and students from Al-Azhar University attended the event.
The ceremony began with a moment of silence to honor the martyrs, followed by reciting the national anthem.
The Turkish military attaché in Cairo Ahmed Tosun highlighted that the cemetery in Cairo has the remains of 4500 Turkish soldiers who were captured in Sinai and Gaza between 1915 and 1918.
These soldiers later died in prisons, war camps, and hospitals in Egypt. Tosun also recited poetry dedicated to the martyrs of Gallipoli.
On his side, Turkey’s Ambassador to Cairo, Salih Mutlu Şen, described the victory at Gallipoli as "sacred," stating that it was a turning point in world history.
He emphasized that the Turkish nation played a vital role in changing the balance of power as they helped in capturing such victory, led by the great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
Şen noted that heroism, sacrifice, and a deep connection to the homeland were at their peak during this struggle.
He described the Battle of Gallipoli as an epic example of bravery, asserting that it demonstrated the determination to defend the honor and dignity of both the homeland and Islam, despite the heavy price paid.
Moreover, he noted that the battle dealt an unexpected defeat to the great powers of that time, as their attacks targeted the center of the Ottoman Empire.
Şen also acknowledged that the hearts of the Egyptians and the entire Islamic world were in solidarity with the Turks during this significant war, asserting that this heroic struggle affirmed Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s historical value and underscored Turkey’s advancements in the defense industry.
Marking the 110th anniversary of the Gallipoli victory, the Turkish ambassador paid tribute to the martyrs and heroes, as well as the martyrs of the Sinai-Palestine front in Cairo and all those who sacrificed their lives for their homeland.
The event concluded with Quranic recitations and prayers for the souls of the martyrs and heroes.
