US President-elect Donald Trump announced on Friday that the European Union should narrow the trade gap with the United States by buying US oil and gas or face tariffs.
“I told the European Union that they must make up for their large trade deficit with the United States by buying American oil and gas on a large scale, otherwise the tariff would be the only solution,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
According to US data, the US trade deficit with the European Union was $131.3 billion in 2022.
Trump, who has made tariff threats a key tool in his trade policy, has continued to assert his tough stance against U.S. trading partners, including China, Canada and Mexico, during his presidential campaign.
