U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he strongly prefers reaching a verifiable nuclear peace agreement that allows Iran to grow and prosper peacefully.
On Tuesday, Trump signed a presidential memorandum on Iran aimed at reviving the "maximum pressure" policy, enabling the imposition of economic, political, and military measures against the country.
"We hope we won’t have to use the memorandum, and we’ll see if we can reach an agreement with Iran," Trump said.
He also revealed plans to hold talks with his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, on various issues, including Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons. Trump emphasized that Iran cannot be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon but acknowledged that it is "very close" to doing so.
Commenting on reports of Iran’s past assassination plots against him, Trump warned, "If Iran retaliates and tries to kill me, we will annihilate them."
