Former US President Donald Trump has nominated Mike Waltz to serve as Washington’s next ambassador to the United Nations, just hours after reports surfaced that Waltz was dismissed from his role as National Security Advisor.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Waltz for his dedication to national service, citing his military experience, tenure in Congress, and recent role as National Security Advisor.

Trump expressed confidence that Waltz would continue to prioritize American interests in his new diplomatic role.

Trump also announced that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will temporarily assume the role of acting National Security Advisor, while maintaining his leadership of the State Department.

Waltz, a former Republican congressman from Florida and a retired Army Green Beret, is 51 years old.

His departure from the National Security Council follows internal criticism over his involvement in a controversial Signal messaging exchange with senior Trump aides in March. The discussion reportedly touched on potential military strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.

The nomination of Waltz and Rubio’s interim appointment come as Trump prepares for a possible return to the White House, signaling a reshuffling of his national security team amid growing global tensions.
