The US Department of Homeland Security announced Monday that the administration of President Donald Trump will provide a $1,000 grant and travel assistance to migrants who voluntarily choose to "self-deport" from the United States.
The Trump administration has attempted to encourage migrants to leave voluntarily by threatening heavy fines, attempting to strip them of their legal status, and deporting them to the notorious prisons at Guantanamo Bay and El Salvador.
According to US media, the agency reported that the cost of the grant and potential airfare for migrants who leave voluntarily will be less than the cost of actual deportation.
The average cost of arresting, detaining, and deporting someone without legal status currently stands at approximately $17,000, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
