Today (July 14th) marks the 77th death anniversary of the remarkable Syrian star Asmahan Al-Atrash, widely regarded as the most beautiful actress to ever grace the Arab screen.
Born Amal Al-Atrash on November 22, 1912, she was the sister of renowned actor and singer Farid Al-Atrash.
Asmahan is known for her collaborations with legendary Egyptian composers such as Dawood Hosni, Riyad Al-Sunbati, Mohamed El-Qasabgi, Medhat Assem, and her brother, Farid Al-Atrash.
She was also well-known for her soft, nasally voice, which set her apart from her peers and earned her a devoted fan base. Often referred to as the 'Queen of Arab Romantic Music,' Asmahan produced numerous hits that gained attention across the Arab world.
Some of her most popular evergreen tunes include "Ya Habibi Taala Elhaani," "Emta Hata' Raf," and "Layali El Ouns Fi Vienna."
Asmahan was married three times and had one daughter, Kamellia, with her first husband, Prince Hassan Al-Atrash.
As for her acting career, she made her debut alongside her brother Farid Al-Atrash and Bishara Wakim in "The Triumph of Youth" (1941). Her second and last movie, "Passion and Revenge," involved Asmahan being paid EGP 17,000, the highest wage paid to a female star at the time, according to Egyptian media. Sadly, she didn't complete filming for this movie as she passed away in 1944 before its completion.
On the morning of July 14th, 1944, the Egyptian newspapers reported the death of the most famous singer of her day at the age of 31, under curious circumstances.
