TikTok will be banned on almost all devices issued by the US federal government after lawmakers passed a $1.70 trillion spending bill, according to the No TikTok on Government Devices Act.

As reported by Engadget, the Biden administration has until February 2023 to apply the rules that will ban the platform from devices managed by the federal government.

“The legislation requires the Biden administration to establish rules to remove TikTok from government devices by mid-February,” the statement read. “The bill carved out exceptions for elected officials, congressional staff, law enforcement agents and other officials.”

The White House greenlighted the decision on Friday after the Senate voted 68-29 in favour of the bill.

On the same day, U.S. President Joe Biden inked a stopgap bill that funded the government for another week in order to avert a shutdown until the omnibus bill landed on his desk.
