US State Department spokesman Ned Price said that the United States was able to confirm the deaths of three Americans as a result of the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria.

Officials fear there will be more American casualties, according to Price.

Price could not determine whether the Americans were killed in Turkey or in Syria.

The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck large areas of Turkey and Syria has so far exceeded 20,000, according to an official toll published Thursday.

The Turkish authorities announced that the number of earthquake victims had risen to 17,134, and the authorities added that the number of injured ones exceeded 70,000.
