Tens of thousands of Cubans participated in a march past the US Embassy in Havana, accusing Israel of committing "genocide" against Palestinians in Gaza.

The march, led by Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Thursday, marked a significant event as it was the first of its kind in over a decade.

The route, which passed along Havana's coastal Malecón road where the US diplomatic headquarters is located, echoed the larger demonstrations historically organized by the late Cuban President Fidel Castro.

These past protests were often against US sanctions and interference in Cuban affairs.

Demonstrators, waving Palestinian flags and banners supporting the Palestinian cause, chanted slogans such as "Free, free Palestine," and "Israel is genocide."

They expressed support for "Palestinian freedom" as they passed by the embassy building and gathered nearby.

Cuba, governed by communists, has been a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause for decades.

The country has contributed to this cause by training over 200 Palestinian doctors and maintains no diplomatic relations with Israel.

The rally comes in the wake of Israel's devastating invasion and bombardment of Gaza, following an incursion by Hamas militants who breached the border fence, killing 1200 and taking about 240 hostages on October 7, according to Israeli statistics.

Palestinian health authorities report that since then, around 14,800 Gazans have been killed by Israeli bombing, with nearly 40% being children.
