The 46th Edition of the Egyptian Film Society Festival for Egyptian Cinema kicked off with the screening of movie “Al Def” (The guest), which is competing for this year's festival awards.

The Guest is a 2019 movie was created by filmmakers of “Mawlana” and “Hepta: The Last Lecture”.

It is written by Ibrahim Essa and directed by Hadi Al-Bagouri, and co-starring Khaled El Sawy, Shereen Reda, Ahmed Malek, Jamila Awad, and others.

The movie revolves around an intellectual youth who visits the house of a prominent intellectual (played by El Sawy), asking for his daughter's hand in marriage.

He is surprised by the youth’s ideology which contradicts with the family’s ideology. The Guest concludes with a jaw-dropping surprise, as the audience discovers that the groom is "a terrorist", which greatly shock everyone. The movie screening was followed by a discussion with Al-Bagouri, which was led by critic Rami Al-Metwally.

The director revealed that the shooting of the movie was a great challenge for him not only because of the events of the movie, which take place in one place, the protagonist's home but because the idea of the movie depends on the script in the first place.

“The script is most intense and revolves around very sensitive ideas, which is the renewal of the religious discourse that is being discussed in a movie for the first time,” Al-Bagouri said.

He continued: “not to mention the heavy religious problems that the script deals with it in-depth, which is something that writer Ibrahim Essa excels at.”

“The importance of the script made it necessary for me not add soundtrack except in the final scene where the audience can finally break free from the tension that they felt throughout the events— which was my intention,” Al-Bagouri pointed out.

The director revealed that the movie's concluding scene was composed by music composer Hesham Nazih. Al-Bagouri pointed out he held a separate workshop for Malik from the other workshops held for the cast on intention so that Malik does not meet with El Sawy— who had never met before.

“This continued throughout the preparations. They only met in shooting the first scene, whose psychological effect is notable in the movie, especially since they are the two main parties in the conflict.” Al-Bagouri revealed.
