Syria has formally submitted its application to join the BRICS group, as confirmed by its ambassador to Moscow, Bashar Jaafari.

This announcement was made during the "North Caucasus: New Geostrategic Opportunities" forum, where Jaafari highlighted Syria’s significant interest in becoming a member of the expanding international organization.

BRICS, originally founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, saw South Africa join the group in 2011.

Recently, the coalition has been growing, with Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia set to gain full membership starting January 1, 2024.

Russia currently holds the presidency of the BRICS group, and the upcoming summit is scheduled to take place in Kazan from October 22 to 24, 2024.

The North Caucasus forum, held in Stavropol on October 4-5, is an annual event organized by the North Caucasus Institute, which is part of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration.

The forum focuses on the region’s geopolitical importance and strategic opportunities, underlining its growing role in international relations.
