Syria and South Korea have announced the establishment of diplomatic relations, marking a significant milestone in the history of their bilateral ties.

The agreement, signed on Thursday, sets the stage for the opening of embassies between the two nations for the first time.

According to a statement from the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Faisal Mekdad, welcomed a high-level delegation from South Korea led by Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong.

Additionally, Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara also met with the South Korean foreign minister, as noted in a statement released by the Syrian Presidency.

The foreign ministry's statement highlighted that both sides agreed to open embassies and exchange diplomatic missions. The move is part of Syria's broader efforts to regain its regional and global influence, which it has lost due to the policies of the previous government.

South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the two countries signed the agreement in the Syrian capital, Damascus, officially marking the commencement of diplomatic relations.

Historically, Syria had close relations with North Korea under the rule of Bashar al-Assad, who was ousted in December of the previous year.

The new agreement with South Korea represents a shift in Syria's foreign policy as it seeks to improve its international standing.
