Syrian President Bashar al-Assad announced on Wednesday the appointment of Ayman Soussan as the Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Mr. Maher Baddour as the Ambassador to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.

According to a statement from Syria's state news agency SANA, Ayman Soussan was officially sworn in before President Assad, marking a significant diplomatic development. This appointment signifies the first Syrian ambassador to be dispatched to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since 2012.

In 2012, Saudi Arabia severed ties with Syria and expelled the then-Syrian Ambassador Mahdi Dakhlallah in the midst of the Syrian war. The recent appointment of Ayman Soussan is part of the ongoing efforts to mend diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Earlier, on April 12, the Syrian Foreign Ministry had announced the restoration of consular services and air travel between Syria and Saudi Arabia, representing a pivotal step towards reconciliation. Subsequently, on May 10, the ministry declared the resumption of its diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia, reciprocating the kingdom's decision to reinstate its diplomatic representatives in Syria. These diplomatic moves indicate a positive trajectory in the efforts to heal strained relations between Syria and Saudi Arabia.
