On Sunday, Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said his country plans to join the European common air defence system, which was agreed upon by NATO members last year.

According to the Local Sweden news outlet, Kristersson mentioned that Sweden would join a 15-country initiative to create a joint anti-missile defence system, the European Sky Shield initiative, proposed at a summit of NATO defence ministers in October.

“The war in Ukraine shows how important it is to have a modern air defence to protect the civilian population and infrastructure,” he said, as quoted by the media.

The prime minister noted that Sweden should contribute to NATO's activities with "new capabilities", including its air force and air defence.

Christerson added that the Swedish ground-armed units are ready to strengthen NATO's defence and, primarily, the defence of the Baltic states.
