The United States Secret Service confirmed Sunday that a man was shot and killed after attempting to enter the Florida residence of US President Donald Trump.
The incident occurred at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s private club and residence in Palm Beach. At the time of the security breach, Trump was in White House with First Lady Melania Trump, hosting a dinner for US governors on Saturday evening.
According to an official statement, Secret Service personnel observed a male suspect in his early twenties near the resort’s north gate carrying what appeared to be a hunting rifle and a container holding fuel. Security officers confronted the individual and opened fire. No agents were injured in the confrontation.
The suspect’s identity has not been publicly disclosed. The Secret Service stated that the shooting involved both federal agents and an officer from the Palm Beach Police Department, according to the Associated Press.
The incident comes amid heightened concerns over political violence in the United States. In 2024, Trump survived two assassination attempts. He was wounded during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024. In a separate incident on September 15, 2024, a man armed with a rifle was arrested near Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach while the president was present. The suspect in that case was sentenced to life imprisonment earlier this month.
The broader political climate has also seen additional deadly incidents. Minnesota Democratic lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot and killed in June 2025. Months later, conservative activist Charlie Kirk was killed during a rally at a university in Utah.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attempted breach at Mar a Lago, as security agencies remain on high alert in response to ongoing threats against political figures in the United States.
