Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has welcomed the statement of the head of Sudan's military transitional council Lt-Gen Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman al-Burhan on his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Uganda, according to Al-Arabiya TV channel.

Hamdouk said that foreign relations are at the heart of the government's duties according to the constitutional document.

Breaking the silence on a meeting held on Monday with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Uganda, Burhan confirmed the meeting with the Israeli premier and said it was aimed at protecting Sudan's national security.

"I took this step as part of my responsibility... to protect the national security of Sudan and achieve the supreme interests of the Sudanese people," Burhan said in a statement.

He added that nothing had changed in Khartoum's position towards the Palestinian issue and the right of Palestinians to set up an independent state "remained and will remain firm."

It is worth mentioning that, reports in Israel and abroad in recent years have said that Israel might renew its diplomatic relations with several Muslim countries on the African continent, including Mali, Niger, and Sudan.

After Netanyahu visited Chad in 2019, it was reported that Israel was working to formalize ties with Sudan, and Israeli officials spoke about it publicly on several occasions, especially after the ouster of dictator Omar al-Bashir.
