Dr. Mohamed Othman El-Koasht, the Cairo University president, announced that the Stroke Unit of Kasr Al-Ayni Medicine Hospital won a diamond award globally from the World Stroke Federation. The Federation is collaborating with the European Stroke Organization, which is the highest prize for evaluating the performance of stroke units worldwide.
El-Khosht explained that the Kasr Al-Ayni Medical Hospital is the only health institution that has received this award in Africa and the Middle East. It is the second time that the unit has received the award. The Stroke Unit is the largest unit of its kind in the Middle East and Africa and has no analogous capacity in Europe.
It conforms to European Therapeutic Protocol that relies on the principle of the golden hour; it is made up of 32 beds, including 16 care beds medium and 16 ICU beds. The unit serves about 1,000 inpatients, 13,000 patients in emergency stroke, clot melting for approximately 200 patients annually, as well as a therapeutic brain catheterization is administered for 25 patients annually.
El-Khosht thanked the administration of Qasr Al-Ainy Medicine College and hospitals for their excellent performance in providing their services at the highest level and for obtaining international awards despite the conditions the world is going through. He also hailed the unit management Stroke Unit and its members, adding that the unit will be honored during the next Science Day.
