Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called on the European Union to respond to Madrid and Dublin's initiative by suspending the free trade agreement with Israel, in light of Israel's recent actions in Gaza and Lebanon.
In recent months, Spain and Ireland have engaged in discussions with other EU member states to review the partnership agreement between the EU and Israel, citing concerns that Israel may be violating the human rights clauses outlined in the agreement.
This growing sentiment within the EU has prompted calls for stronger action in response to the ongoing violence.
During a press conference held after he met with Pope Francis at the Vatican, Sánchez reiterated his position, urging the international community to halt arms exports to Israel immediately.
He emphasized that, given the developments in the Middle East, global powers needed to reconsider their support for Israel's military operations.
Sánchez also expressed grave concerns over Israeli airstrikes targeting the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) headquarters, a move that has drawn widespread international condemnation
