Spain has officially applied to join the case brought by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice regarding "genocide," according to statements from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Court.

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that this intervention is based on the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948, citing Article 63 of the Court's statute.

It noted that Colombia, Mexico, and Palestine have already intervened, with Ireland, Belgium, and Chile intending to join the case.

Spain affirmed that its objective with this move is to contribute to restoring peace in Gaza and the Middle East, ending the conflict, and promoting a two-state solution to ensure peaceful coexistence between Palestinians and Israelis.

On December 29, 2023, South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice for alleged violations of the 1948 Genocide Convention.

Since then, several countries have requested to join the case, including Palestine, Turkey, Libya, Nicaragua, Colombia, and Mexico.
