Dr. Riek Machar, South Sudan’s first vice president, and his wife Angelina Teny tested positive for the coronavirus on Monday.
Machar announced on state television on Monday evening that he would go with his wife Teny, who serves as Defense and Veteran’s Affairs Minister, into self-isolation for 14 days at their residence.
He also said that a number of his staff including security guards had also contracted the virus.
However, the South Sudan’s Health Ministry Undersecretary Dr. Makur Koryom said the First Vice President and his wife have not shown symptoms for the disease.
“Both are in good health, they have no symptoms, they are in high spirit,” Makur said.
The number of Covid19 patients in Africa’s youngest nation has reached 360 cases. Six people have succumbed to death and four recovered.
