Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will visit Cairo On Monday, where he will discuss the latest developments of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) crisis, according to sources, according to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The sources added that Moscow may play the role of mediator in the conflict that has been going on for years. The minister's upcoming visit comes after earlier reports had expected Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit Egypt this month.
The last round of negotiations between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia over the dam failed to find any way out of the years-long conflict.
Lavrov's previous visit to Cairo took place on April 5-6, 2019. On October 27-31, 2020, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt Sameh Shoukry was in Moscow on a working visit.
On March 2, 2021, Russian-Egyptian inter-MFA consultations on European issues were held in Cairo with the participation of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia.
On March 23-24, 2021, bilateral consultations on UN activities and human rights issues were held in Cairo by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia.
During Sergey Lavrov's upcoming visit to Egypt, issues of further building up cooperation in the trade and economic sphere in accordance with the agreements reached earlier will be thoroughly considered.
