A source in the Russian mission to the United Nations (UN) confirmed to the Russian "Novosti" news agency that the UN Security Council will discuss the situation on Ukraine against the background of Russia's recognition of the independence of the separatist republics of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern part Ukraine.
Western members of the UN Security Council called for an emergency meeting Monday evening to discuss the Russian decision to recognize the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk republics from Ukraine, diplomats told AFP, a French news agency.
The Western countries that invited to the meeting of the UN Security Council based on a letter sent by Ukraine to the United Nations. They are the United States of America (USA), France, Britain, Ireland, and Albania, according to the same source.
In his letter to his Russian counterpart Vasily Nebenzia, the Ukrainian ambassador to the United Nations, Sergey Kislitsa, invoked the Charter of the United Nations and its rules of procedure to demand the presence of a representative of Ukraine at this emergency meeting.
It is worth noting that on Monday, February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Russia's recognition of the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics.
