Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received a phone call on Friday from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss the latest developments regarding the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

Presidential Spokesperson Mohamed El-Shenawy stated that the call focused on the details of the recently brokered “Egyptian-Qatari-American” agreement to halt hostilities in the Gaza Strip. President El-Sisi emphasized the importance of reaching a consensus on all aspects related to the different stages of the agreement and ensuring its full implementation.

Secretary-General Guterres expressed his deep appreciation to Egypt and President El-Sisi for their sustained efforts to end the war and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He praised Egypt’s pivotal role over the past two years in mediating ceasefires, facilitating humanitarian aid delivery, and coordinating with the United Nations and relief agencies to ease the suffering of Gaza’s civilians.

Guterres reiterated the UN’s readiness to continue working closely with Egyptian governmental and humanitarian institutions to improve living conditions in the enclave. He also supported El-Sisi’s call to finalize all necessary details of the ceasefire’s stages, stressing the need for a pathway leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in line with international legitimacy, while preserving the territorial unity of Gaza and the West Bank.

According to Ambassador El-Shenawy, the Secretary-General underlined the necessity of deploying international forces in Gaza and granting the agreement international legitimacy through a United Nations Security Council resolution. Guterres also called for the immediate start of reconstruction efforts and welcomed Egypt’s initiative to host an international conference dedicated to rebuilding Gaza.

The UN chief described Egypt as a “central and indispensable pillar” for stability in the Middle East, commending President El-Sisi’s “wise leadership” as a decisive factor in reaching the ceasefire and achieving a positive outcome for the region.

President El-Sisi, for his part, expressed sincere gratitude for Guterres’s constructive stance since the beginning of the Gaza crisis. He confirmed that Egypt has already begun dispatching urgent food and medical aid shipments to Gaza following the ceasefire, and reaffirmed Cairo’s firm support for the work of UN agencies, particularly UNRWA, in assisting Palestinian refugees both inside Gaza and across host countries.

El-Sisi stressed the need to preserve UNRWA’s historic role in providing relief and services to Palestinians, underscoring Egypt’s ongoing commitment to a just and lasting peace in the region.
