President Abdel Fattah El Sisis will inaugurate the recently-established 3rd of July Naval Base located on the Mediterranean Sea on Saturday, according to Presidency Spokesperson Bassam Rady.
The new base is located near the Egyptian-Libyan border in Gargoub district, Al-Nujaila town, some 70 km west of Marsa Matrouh conforming to the code of global military bases, according to Military Spokesman Colonel Gharib Abdel Hafez.
Egypt shares an extended border with Libya, around 1,250 kilometers.
Its main mission is to preserve the western part of the Egyptian northern coast on the Mediterranean and secure a number of major projects and new cities there, most importantly the El-Dabaa nuclear plant, that will be constructed by Russia’s Rosatom soon.
The 3rd of July naval base will be part of the Egyptian Northern Fleet that guards the country’s Mediterranean coast.
The new base contains a wide range of naval equipment, including one of the two helicopter carriers Egypt acquired from France in 2016, media reports said.
Sources told SEE that five heads of state and leaders will attend the inauguration.
