President Abdel Fattah El Sisi delegated Brigadier General Sherif Lotfy Abdel Hamid Zakzouq to attend the funeral of Major General Mahmoud Anwar Nasr who passed away on Sunday.
Sisi asked Zakzouq to convey his sincere condolences and sympathy to Nasr's family. The funeral is set to be held on Monday.
Nasr was a member of Egypt's ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, known widely as SCAF, after the ouster of late President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
One of Nasr's famous statements was made in March 2011, saying that military spending makes up just 5 per cent of the government's budget, less than half the proportion in other countries, with the army covering the rest of its expenditures itself.
The numbers, which have never been disclosed before, were unveiled by Nasr, Former Assistant Minister of Defence for Financial Affairs, during a meeting with members of the media and Egyptian analysts in 2012.
Well-known anchor and journalist Mostafa Bakri mourned Nasr as well on Twitter.
"Major General Mahmoud Nasr, a member of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces during the transitional period that Egypt lived after the events of January 25, passed away," Bakri tweeted on Sunday.
