The Singapore government has ordered the closure of all cinemas in the country for a month, in an attempt to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The measures, announced by was made by the country’s COVID-19 multi-ministry task force, will take place starting Thursday at 11:59 pm until April 30.

The task force stated that any gatherings outside school and work will be limited to a maximum of 10 people.

The measures also cover public places such as night clubs, discos, karaoke outlets, and theatres, areas that are said to be a high risk of transmission, due to close contact over a stretch of time.

Furthermore, schools will remain open, but, religious services and congregations will also be suspended, with places of worship will remain open for private worship and funerals, however, it will be limited to 10 people.

Singapore had been seen as successfully managing to stem the spread of the virus, however, the country witnessed in the last few days an abrupt rise of the number of confirmed cases.

As of Tuesday, at least 49 new cases have been confirmed in Singapore, bringing its total to 558, with just 2 deaths.

It is worth mentioning that the World Health Organization (WHO) declared coronavirus a global pandemic on March 11 as the new virus has rapidly spread to more than 121,000 people from Asia to the Middle East, Europe, and the United States.

More cases of the virus, which causes respiratory disease Covid-19, continue to emerge, with outbreaks in South Korea, Italy, and Iran.

The data collected so far showed that at least 440,093 people are infected and about 19,748 people have died.

Transmission of viruses between humans happens when someone comes into contact with an infected person’s secretions, such as droplets in a cough.

They can also be transmitted by coming into contact with something an infected person has touched and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes.

It is known that older people appear to be more vulnerable to the effects of the emerging virus.
