Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received today, Wednesday, the British Minister of State for North Africa, South and Central Asia, the Commonwealth and the United Nations, Lord Tariq Ahmad.
Ahmed Hafez, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that this visit comes in light of the importance the British side attaches to strengthening cooperation with Egypt, in addition to holding the first partnership council between Egypt and the United Kingdom under the chairmanship of Shoukry and British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss to push forward various files of bilateral cooperation, consultation, and coordination on various issues.
Hafez added that Shoukry welcomed, during the meeting, the British government’s decision to change travel advisories for the southern part of South Sinai and Fayoum governorate.
Shoukry also stressed the importance of British investments in Egypt, and the aspiration to enhance its involvement in giant development projects to make use of the promising investment opportunities in Egypt.
On the other hand, Shoukry reviewed the achievements and efforts exerted by Egypt in the human rights file within the framework of implementing the national human rights strategy and efforts related to upholding the principles of citizenship and equality, promoting the values of tolerance, and renewing religious discourse in the light of efforts made to combat extremism.
Hafez also indicated that both ministers exchanged views on all international and regional issues, including the repercussions of the crisis in Ukraine, the tension and escalation in the Palestinian territories, as well as the latest developments in the Libyan scene.
At the end of the meeting, Shoukry and the British Minister of State agreed on the importance of working together to enhance bilateral relations between Egypt and Britain.
