Global energy giant Shell is moving forward with an ambitious strategy to accelerate natural gas exploration and production in Egypt, reinforcing the country’s position as a key regional energy hub.
The announcement followed high-level talks between Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, and Cedric Cremers, President of Integrated Gas at Shell. The meeting, attended by Dalia El Gabry and senior ministry officials, focused on expanding ongoing cooperation in the natural gas sector.
Badawi emphasized that Egypt’s partnership with Shell is entering a “new phase,” driven by a comprehensive work program aimed at accelerating exploration activities and increasing production levels. The initiative is expected to strengthen domestic supply and reduce reliance on imported gas.
The government has prioritized boosting output amid rising energy demand, positioning international partnerships as a cornerstone of its strategy.
The discussions also highlighted a landmark agreement to fast-track the development of the Aphrodite Gas Field in Cyprus, linking it to Egypt’s existing infrastructure. The project involves collaboration between Shell and Chevron, and is seen as a pivotal step in enhancing regional energy integration.
Officials say the move will strengthen Egypt’s role as a regional center for gas trading and distribution, while opening new avenues for cooperation with Cyprus and Greece.
Badawi underscored the government’s commitment to settling dues owed to international partners, describing it as a key signal of Egypt’s seriousness in fostering an attractive investment environment. The policy is expected to encourage further capital inflows into the energy sector.
On his part, Cremers pointed to Egypt as one of Shell’s key success markets, noting that recent production gains have encouraged the company to expand its investment and operational footprint.
He also praised Egypt’s efforts to maximize the value of its liquefied natural gas infrastructure, particularly at the Idku LNG Plant, highlighting the country’s strong potential in LNG exports.
