Austria has seen a significant drop in the number of asylum applications submitted since the start of 2024, according to the latest official figures.
The data reveals that asylum requests have decreased by 57%, with fewer than 19,000 applications filed between January and September this year, compared to the same period in 2023.
The Austrian Asylum and Immigration Authority reported that 18,816 asylum applications were received in the first three quarters of 2024, marking a reduction of 25,000 requests from the previous year.
This represents a substantial 57% decrease when compared to the first nine months of 2023.
The decline in asylum applications in Austria is notably higher than in other European countries, where the overall reduction has been only 8%.
Austria’s drop has become more pronounced in recent months, particularly in September, which saw a sharp 78% reduction in applications, the highest monthly decline this year.
This sharp drop comes amid broader trends in Europe, although Austria's figures highlight a more dramatic shift in its asylum landscape.
