A migrant was killed and at least 6 others, including a girl, were injured Saturday in Serbia near the Hungarian border in an exchange of fire between groups of migrants, Public Radio and Television of Serbia reported.

A 16-year-old was seriously injured during a shooting incident in a forest near Subotica, about 160 km in northern Belgrade, where the injured were taken to hospital, according to TRS.

Stefan Bakic, the mayor of Subotica, told the media that the wounded, aged between 20 and 30, did not have identification papers, according to the French news agency, "AFP".

According to the media, the shooting targeted Afghan and Pakistani migrants, which indicated that the cause of the incident may be related to the trafficking movement that smugglers engage in in order to bring illegal migrants across the border to Hungary, a member state of the EU.

Serbia lies on the Balkan route used by migrants from the Middle East, Asia, and Africa who seek to reach Western Europe.

Although this route is less crowded than during the migrant crisis in 2015, tens of thousands of illegal migrants pass through the area each year.
