Following a deadly earthquake that struck Turkey and its border with Syria earlier this month, Saudi Arabia's Search and Rescue Team has finished its work there, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) announced on Thursday.

The Saudi squad, which is a component of the Kingdom's Civil Defense force, commenced 24-hour searches for survivors who may be buried beneath the wreckage of collapsed buildings in 47 different locations throughout three Turkish cities.

The search team worked in the Turkish cities of Kahramanmaras, Antakya, and Gaziantep. In order to identify the areas in which they would be conducting their search and rescue operations and rendering medical and humanitarian aid, the Saudi team first met with the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), local authorities, and the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG).

On Thursday, the team returned to Riyadh after completing its assignment.

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria claimed more than 47,000 lives and left hundreds of thousands injured and homeless.

In order to assist earthquake victims and keep track of relief operations and programmes, volunteer teams from the King Salman Humanitarian Assistance and Relief Center (KSRelief) are still working on the ground in Syria and Turkey.

King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman are in charge of the Kingdom's rescue and aid operations.
