The Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen said on Monday that Saudi air forces intercepted and shot down Houthi drones targeting civilian airports in the kingdom.

The Coalition, in a statement, accused the Iran-backed militias of violating international law, saying attacks on civilian airports are considered “war crimes.”

According to SPA, Spokesman Col. Turki al-Maliki reiterated that the Coalition will continue to carry out deterrence measures against the terrorists to limit their capabilities in line with international humanitarian law.

Yemeni Houthi forces claimed the drone attacks targeted the King Khalid airbase and Abha and Najran airports.

Al-Maliki stressed that the Houthi attempts to target airports and civilians were in clear “violation of international humanitarian law”.

Saudi Arabia has been targeted by hundreds of missile attacks since entering the Yemen civil war in 2015 to support ousted President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi against the Houthis.

Last month, Saudi forces intercepted and shot down two unmanned drones launched by the Houthis towards Khamis Mushait city.

The process of intercepting and shooting down the hostile aircraft caused the fall of shrapnel and debris, in a residential neighbourhood, resulting in minor damages of a residential building and some vehicles.

An attack on the Abha airport in June killed one person and wounded several others.
