Newly released satellite images of Gaza reveal the extent of the damage caused by Israel's intense aerial bombardment of the territory over the past three weeks. The aerial attacks have left dozens of tower blocks completely destroyed or badly damaged, along with large areas of closely packed buildings reduced to piles of grey rubble.
The latest images show three areas in the north of Gaza that have been hit particularly hard. Beit Hanoun, a district located in the northeastern corner of Gaza just 2km away from the border with Israel, is one of the areas that has been heavily affected.
The Israeli military has identified it as a Hamas hub and was one of the first areas where Israel warned residents to evacuate. The district has been left in ruins, leaving the 2.2 million people living in Gaza without a home.
According to the Gaza Housing Ministry, about 45% of all the housing units in the territory have been either completely destroyed, rendered uninhabitable, or damaged. An estimated 1.4 million people are internally displaced.
Thousands of Palestinians have been evacuated from their homes in the north of Gaza after being told by the Israeli military to leave for their own safety. However, some have returned to the north because strikes are also being carried out in the south.
