South Korea’s Interior Minister, Lee Sang-min, has resigned following the fallout from President Yoon Suk-yeol’s failed attempt to impose martial law earlier this week.

The sudden resignation, reported by multiple local media outlets on Sunday, comes as both Lee and Yoon face investigations for alleged “rebellion” related to the incident.

In his resignation letter, Lee cited his failure to adequately serve the people and the president as reasons for stepping down, according to JoongAng Ilbo. Yoon accepted his resignation amidst mounting public and political pressure.

The controversy stems from Yoon’s unexpected declaration of martial law on Tuesday evening, a move that faced swift backlash from lawmakers and citizens alike.

Within six hours, the president was forced to revoke the order under intense pressure from Parliament and public protests.

On Saturday, President Yoon narrowly avoided an impeachment motion brought by opposition parties in response to the martial law debacle.

The motion failed due to a lack of quorum in the National Assembly after ruling party lawmakers walked out of the chamber.

Adding to the political turmoil, South Korean police detained former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun on Sunday morning.

Kim, who held office during the martial law declaration, was already barred from leaving the country amid ongoing investigations.
