South Korea’s government said Thursday that the country plans to provide $1 million in humanitarian aid to support the victims of the Afghanistan earthquake.

The Foreign Ministry in Seoul said that it looks forward to supporting Afghan people who are suffering due to the strong earthquake that hit southeastern their country yesterday.

A source in the ministry explained that the government plans to offer $1 million in humanitarian aid through international organizations as soon as possible.

The source added that international organizations such as UNICEF and the UN World Food Programme are working in Afghanistan, and the government will provide aid to Afghanistan through one of the organizations.

The Korean government took this decision quickly, taking into account the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, according to the source.

The source stressed that the government continues to provide humanitarian aid to countries affected by natural disasters and their people.

The powerful earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.1, hit Paktika province in Afghanistan, leaving more than a thousand people dead.

Foreign media quoted the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Afghanistan, Ramiz Alakbarov, as saying that nearly 2,000 homes were destroyed due to the earthquake.
