South Korea is exploring the possibility of establishing formal diplomatic relations with Syria, following the end of the Assad family's nearly 50-year rule.
The decision follows an official visit by a senior South Korean diplomat to Syria earlier this month, where discussions were held with representatives of the Syrian Interim Government.
The government welcomed the potential establishment of diplomatic ties with Seoul.
Officials in South Korea believe the conditions are now favorable for formalizing relations. The Syrian Interim Government has also expressed its readiness to open a new chapter in bilateral relations.
Syria is currently the only United Nations member state that does not have diplomatic ties with South Korea.
