France's President Emmanuel Macron hopes to visit South Korea at an early date for talks with President Yoon Suk-yeol, Seoul's top envoy here said on Sunday.

Ambassador Choi Jai-chul said he presented his credentials to Macron at the Elysee Palace on Friday, then had an hour-long conversation, joined by several new foreign ambassadors.

Macron was quoted as saying that he hopes to visit South Korea as soon as possible to discuss ways to develop relations between Seoul and Paris.

Yoon invited Macron to South Korea during their talks in June on the sidelines of the Madrid 2022 summit of NATO member and partner nations.

No French president has visited South Korea for nearly eight years. In November 2015, then-President François Hollande paid a state visit to attend a summit with then-President of South Korea Park Geun-hye.

Macron visited South Korea in November 2014 for a ministerial meeting while serving as minister of Economy, Industry, and Digital Affairs under Hollande's administration.

on appointed Choi as the ambassador to France last month. Choi previously served as ambassador to Morocco and Denmark and chief envoy on climate change.
