The mysterious Russian military station known as UVB-76, or “Doomsday Radio,” has transmitted its third audible message since the start of the year, reigniting international interest in its sporadic and enigmatic broadcasts.

The latest transmission, detected at 19:16 Moscow time, included the Russian word “ботва, "literally meaning “plant tops” or “green leaves” but sometimes used colloquially to signify “nonsense” or “rubbish.”

No official explanation has been given for the message, and its precise significance remains unclear.

UVB-76, often referred to as “The Buzzer”, was established in the 1970s and typically broadcasts a repetitive buzzing sound on the 4625 kHz frequency, interrupted only occasionally by voice messages or other signals.

Its unusual, irregular transmissions have drawn the attention of amateur radio enthusiasts and signal analysts worldwide, who monitor even the smallest deviations from its standard buzzer pattern.

The recent appearance of the word “ботва” adds to the longstanding mystery surrounding the station, whose exact purpose and operational role remain officially undisclosed.

For decades, UVB-76 has fascinated observers as a relic of Cold War-era military communications that continues to operate in the digital age.
