On Tuesday, Sergey Naryshkin, the head of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service, labeled the incursion by Hamas fighters into the Gaza envelope settlements on October 7, 2023, as a "complete failure" for Israeli intelligence.

In an interview with the "Solovyov" television channel, Naryshkin responded to a question on the matter, stating, "Yes, it is a failure, first and foremost, of the intelligence that was considered one of the strongest in the world but utterly failed. Because of this general failure, Israeli officials still have to face the consequences."

Naryshkin attributed the failure of Israeli intelligence to "such complex operations happening in the world," adding, "The world is boiling and in a state of chaos, intelligence services have not weakened compared to their performance level there 10, 15, or 20 years ago. It's just that the working conditions have significantly changed for the worse. And this is concerning."

On October 7, 2023, the Hamas movement announced the commencement of "Al-Aqsa Flood" operation, launching thousands of rockets from Gaza into Israel and storming the so-called "Gaza envelope" settlements adjacent to the sector, resulting in the death of approximately 1,200 Israelis, including military personnel and settlers, and capturing about 250 others.

In response, Israel officially declared war on the Gaza Strip, initiating with devastating bombings followed by ground military operations within the sector. To date, Israeli operations in Gaza have resulted in approximately 31,000 deaths and over 72,000 injuries, the majority of whom are children and women, causing widespread hunger, disease outbreaks, and turning vast areas of its land into ruins.
