The Russian government has reported that 56 civilians were killed and hundreds more injured in attacks carried out by Ukrainian forces in a region of western Russia during December, signalling a further escalation in tensions between Moscow and Kyiv.

According to statements from Russian officials, the civilian deaths occurred across multiple localities near the Ukrainian border, where artillery, missile strikes, and drone attacks have increased amid intensifying military confrontations. The figures include men, women, and children, and remain part of disputed casualty assessments between the two countries.

Russian authorities say that residential areas, markets, and civilian infrastructure were hit during the incidents, resulting in both fatalities and significant material damage. Emergency services in the affected region reportedly evacuated dozens of wounded civilians to local hospitals, where medical teams are continuing to treat injuries ranging from moderate to severe.

Moscow has denounced the attacks on civilian populations as deliberate, calling them violations of international norms and demanding accountability for what it describes as war crimes. Russian leaders reiterated calls for international scrutiny and pressure on Ukrainian military operations along the border.

The Ukrainian government has neither confirmed nor denied specific casualty figures, instead characterizing military actions as defensive measures against continued Russian aggression. Ukraine maintains that it targets only legitimate military objectives in response to larger hostilities.

The reported deaths come amid broader hostilities between Russia and Ukraine that have persisted since full-scale invasion began in 2022, with both sides trading accusations over civilian harm and violations of international humanitarian law. The situation continues to draw global concern as diplomatic efforts to reduce violence have yet to yield lasting agreements.
