US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping reached what he described as “common ground” regarding the Iranian file during recent discussions between the two sides.

Speaking to NBC, Rubio said Trump discussed Iran and wider regional developments with the Chinese leader, particularly issues linked to maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Rubio, China expressed opposition to the “militarization of the Strait of Hormuz” and also rejected the idea of imposing a fee system on maritime navigation through the strategic waterway, a position that Washington also supports.

The US secretary of state stressed that the United States is not seeking Chinese assistance on the issue, saying, “We do not need their help,” while noting that both countries share a common understanding regarding the importance of maintaining stable international trade routes and maritime security.

The comments come amid escalating regional tensions and continued negotiations related to Iran, global energy supplies, and the security of international shipping lanes.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important energy corridors, with a significant portion of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passing through the narrow maritime route.

Growing concerns over regional instability and shipping security have intensified international diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing wider disruptions to global trade and energy markets.
